A parent's guide to sunscreen, SPF and protecting every skin tone

She came in from the garden after what felt like no time at all. Red arms. Pink nose. That particular look on her face that's half confused, half sorry.

'But we weren't out for long.'

If this sounds familiar, there's a good chance it comes down to one thing: skin type.

Not all skin responds to UV in the same way. A child with very fair skin, ginger hair, and freckles can begin to burn in under ten minutes in strong summer sunlight. A child with deeper brown skin has natural melanin that offers much more built-in defence — but still isn't immune to the kind of UV damage that accumulates quietly over years.

Understanding your child's skin type — and matching their sun protection to it — is one of the most practical things you can do to keep their skin healthy. Here's everything you need to know.


What is the Fitzpatrick scale?

The Fitzpatrick scale is a classification system developed in 1975 by Harvard dermatologist Dr Thomas Fitzpatrick. It divides human skin into six types based on melanin levels, colouring, and the way skin responds to UV exposure.

Melanin — the pigment responsible for skin and hair colour — acts as a partial natural filter against UV radiation. The more melanin in the skin, the more natural protection it offers. But the word 'partial' matters enormously here.

Even the highest melanin levels don't fully block UVA rays — the invisible, deep-penetrating radiation that causes skin ageing, hyperpigmentation, and long-term DNA damage regardless of skin tone.

Every skin type, from Type I to Type VI, needs sunscreen. What changes is the SPF level, the urgency of reapplication, and how quickly damage can occur.


The six skin types — and what they mean for sun protection

Type I — Very fair SPF 50+ — essential every time

Appearance: Pale or porcelain skin, often freckled. Typically ginger or blonde hair. Blue, grey, or green eyes.

Sun response: Burns almost immediately — sometimes within 10 minutes. Never tans.

This is the skin type where sun protection is most urgent. Children with Type I skin carry the highest lifetime risk of UV-related damage. Every outdoor session needs SPF 50+ applied thoroughly and reapplied every two hours — or immediately after swimming. Shade and UV-protective clothing are particularly important during peak UV hours (11am–3pm). If your child has ginger or very blonde hair, pale skin, and freckles, treat every day of sun exposure as high risk.

Type II — Fair SPF 50+ — daily, including overcast days

Appearance: Light skin. Light hair — blonde or light brown. Often blue or green eyes.

Sun response: Burns easily and quickly. Tans only minimally and slowly.

The difference between Type I and Type II is subtle but real — and both require maximum protection. UVA rays travel through cloud cover, so SPF 50+ applies even when it doesn't feel sunny. This is the skin type where 'it's not that sunny today' is the most dangerous thought a parent can have.

Type III — Medium SPF 50 recommended throughout summer

Appearance: Light to medium skin tone. Varied hair and eye colour.

Sun response: Sometimes burns in intense or prolonged sun. Gradually develops a tan.

The tan that Type III skin develops can create a false sense of security — a tan is the skin's damage response, not a signal that protection is no longer needed. UVA damage continues regardless of visible tanning. SPF 50 remains the right call throughout summer, particularly on holiday or during peak UV hours.

Type IV — Olive / light brown SPF 30+ minimum, broad-spectrum

Appearance: Olive or light brown skin. Brown or dark hair. Dark eyes.

Sun response: Rarely burns in normal conditions. Tans easily and deeply.

Natural melanin provides meaningful protection against UVB rays — the ones that cause sunburn — but offers limited defence against UVA. Long-term UV exposure still contributes to skin ageing, hyperpigmentation, and cellular damage in Type IV skin. SPF 30+ broad-spectrum is the appropriate minimum.

Type V — BrownSPF 30+ daily, broad-spectrum UVA and UVB

Appearance: Brown skin. Dark hair and eyes.

Sun response: Very rarely burns. Tans very easily.

Parents of children with Type V skin sometimes wonder whether sunscreen is really necessary. It is. UVA rays penetrate deeply regardless of melanin levels, contributing to premature skin ageing and, over time, hyperpigmentation. Daily SPF 30+ remains important — not to prevent burns, but to protect against the damage that accumulates invisibly.

Type VI — Deep / dark brown SPF 30+ every day

Appearance: Very dark brown or black skin. Very dark hair and eyes.

Sun response: Almost never burns.

The burn risk for Type VI skin is very low. But the long-term case for daily sunscreen is unchanged. UVA-related damage — ageing, hyperpigmentation — still occurs. Acral lentiginous melanoma, a rarer and more aggressive form of skin cancer, is in fact more prevalent in people with darker skin tones — and often diagnosed later because sun damage isn't associated with dark skin in the way it is with fair skin. SPF 30+ every day is a meaningful investment in long-term skin health.


Why every skin type needs sunscreen — including darker skin tones

There's a common misconception that darker skin tones don't need sunscreen. This is a myth — and a potentially harmful one.

While higher melanin levels do provide greater natural UV protection, they do not block UVA rays. UVA radiation is responsible for:

  • Premature skin ageing — wrinkles, loss of elasticity, sunspots
  • Hyperpigmentation — uneven skin tone, melasma, post-inflammatory darkening
  • Long-term DNA damage — which contributes to skin cancer risk over time
Skin cancer affects all skin tones. Sunscreen is for everyone, at every skin type, every day.

How to choose the right sunscreen for your child's skin type

Types I–II

SPF 50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen, every day. Look for UVA and UVB protection — in the UK, check for the UVA circle logo or a 4–5 star UVA rating. Reapply every two hours, more often after swimming. Pair with UV-protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and shade during peak hours (11am–3pm).

Type III

SPF 50 recommended throughout summer. Don't drop to a lower SPF on the assumption that some tanning provides protection — it doesn't protect against UVA.

Types IV–VI

SPF 30+ minimum. Choose a broad-spectrum formula that protects against both UVA and UVB. For darker skin tones, look for formulas that absorb cleanly without leaving a white cast — chemical sunscreens or modern tinted mineral formulas tend to work well.
