Sun Safety Week: Everything Your Family Needs to Know About SPF This Summer

Sun Safety Week: Everything Your Family Needs to Know About SPF This Summer

Sun Safety Week: Everything Your Family Needs to Know About SPF This Summer Sun Safety · SPF & Skin Protection · Summer Skincare · 7th May – 1st July

Every May, Sun Safety Week reminds us to pause and think about how we're protecting our skin. With the warmer months on their way, there's no better time to talk honestly about SPF, skin protection, and what a good summer skincare routine actually looks like for your family.

We hear from so many parents who want to do the right thing when it comes to protecting their little ones in the sun — but between conflicting advice, busy mornings, and kids who won't stand still long enough for sunscreen to go on, it can feel overwhelming. So we're cutting through the noise.

This month, we're proud to be partnering with Nivea — one of the most trusted names in skin protection — to help make sun safety feel simple, accessible, and genuinely doable for every family this summer. Whether you're heading to the park, the beach, or just the school run on a bright May morning, we've got you covered.

Why Sun Safety Matters More Than You Think

We all know sunburn is painful — but the long-term impact of unprotected sun exposure goes much further than a sore shoulder. Dermatologists consistently remind us that the sun damage we accumulate in childhood significantly increases our risk of skin issues later in life. The good news? A solid summer skincare routine with the right SPF protection is one of the simplest ways to look after your family's skin health for the long term.

Sun Safety Week is designed to raise awareness of exactly this — and it's a brilliant reminder to check in on your family's sun habits before the season properly kicks off.

Building a Summer Skincare Routine That Actually Sticks

The key to sun safety isn't finding the most expensive product on the shelf — it's consistency. Here's what a realistic, family-friendly summer skincare routine looks like:

 1. Apply SPF every morning as part of your getting-ready routine — not just on beach days. UV rays are present even on cloudy days, so making it a daily habit is the single most effective thing you can do.

2. Reapply every two hours when outdoors, and immediately after swimming or towel drying. Even water-resistant formulas need topping up — and this is exactly where the Solar Buddie earns its place. It's a compact, portable SPF holder designed to sit in your bag, beach tote, or buggy so there's no excuse not to top up on the go. No more forgotten bottles or excuses.

3. Don't forget ears, the back of the neck, feet, and the tops of hands — the spots we most commonly miss. A quick once-over with your Solar Buddie before heading back out after lunch takes less than a minute and makes a real difference.

4. For children, choose a formula specifically designed for sensitive skin. Nivea's range includes options that are gentle, non-greasy, and easy to apply — which makes the morning routine a lot less of a battle.

5. Keep SPF accessible — not buried at the bottom of a bag. The Solar Buddie is designed to clip on or sit somewhere visible, which is a surprisingly simple nudge that genuinely changes behaviour. Out of sight really does mean out of mind when it comes to reapplication.

6. Check your SPF expiry date before the season starts. Products degrade over time and last summer's bottle may not offer the level of protection stated on the pack. A fresh start to the season means fresh SPF — stock up and you're sorted.

"Sun safety isn't about fear — it's about giving your family the freedom to enjoy every sunny day, confidently."

Busting the Biggest SPF Myths

Despite how much we talk about sun protection, there are still some persistent myths that catch even the most well-informed parents out. Here are the ones we think are worth calling out:

SPF Myth-Busters for Families MYTH

MYTH "One application in the morning is enough for the whole day."

TRUTH: SPF breaks down with sun exposure, sweat, and movement. Reapplication every two hours is essential for continued protection — especially for active kids outdoors.

MYTH "A higher SPF means I don't need to reapply as often."

TRUTH: A higher SPF number extends the level of protection, not the duration. SPF50 still needs reapplying just as regularly as SPF30.

MYTH "It's cloudy — we don't need SPF today."

TRUTH: Up to 80% of UV rays penetrate through cloud cover. In the UK especially, overcast days are no reason to skip the sunscreen.

MYTH "Darker skin tones don't need SPF."

TRUTH: Melanin provides some natural UV protection, but not nearly enough to prevent damage. All skin tones benefit from and need SPF — full stop.

MYTH "Last summer's SPF is fine to use again."

TRUTH: SPF products have a shelf life. Once expired, the active UV filters degrade and the product may offer significantly less protection than the label states. Check the date before you head out.

How to Read a Sun Cream Label (Without Getting Lost)
Pick up a bottle of sun cream and the label can feel like a different language. SPF numbers, UVA circles, PA ratings, broad-spectrum claims — it's a lot. But once you know what each one means, it takes about ten seconds to check whether a product is actually doing the job. Here's your quick guide.

The SPF number — UVB protection
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) tells you how much longer your skin takes to burn compared to wearing nothing. SPF 30 means it takes 30 times longer. But here's what surprises most people — the jump in protection between SPF 30 and SPF 50 is much smaller than the numbers suggest:

•    SPF 15 blocks approximately 93% of UVB rays
•    SPF 30 blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays
•    SPF 50 blocks approximately 98% of UVB rays

For children and fair skin, SPF 50+ is recommended. But remember: no SPF blocks 100% of UV radiation — and none of them work properly without reapplication.

The UVA circle — UVA protection
UVB rays cause sunburn. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and are associated with premature ageing and longer-term skin damage — and crucially, they're present at similar levels year-round, not just in summer.
Look for the UVA circle logo (a circle with the letters UVA inside) on the packaging. This is the EU standard mark indicating the product meets the minimum UVA protection requirement — at least one-third of the SPF value. So an SPF 30 with the UVA circle logo offers a UVA protection factor of at least 10.
No UVA circle? That's a red flag. SPF alone only tells you about UVB protection — you need both.

"Broad-spectrum" — what it actually means
If a product is labelled broad-spectrum, it means it protects against both UVB rays (burning) and UVA rays (deeper damage). It's the most important phrase to look for on any sun cream label — and particularly on children's products.
Broad-spectrum + SPF 50+ + the UVA circle logo is the gold standard for family sun care. If a product has all three, you're in good hands.

PA+ ratings — what you might see on some products
PA ratings (PA+, PA++, PA+++) are a UVA grading system more commonly found on Asian beauty products, though they're becoming more visible on European shelves too. More plus signs = higher UVA protection. Think of them as an alternative to the UVA circle — they're measuring the same thing, just on a different scale.

Chemical vs mineral filters — does it matter?
You might notice some labels listing ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide — these are mineral (also called physical) filters. Others use chemical filters such as avobenzone or octinoxate.

•    Mineral filters sit on top of the skin and deflect UV rays. They tend to be gentler and are often recommended for sensitive or young skin.
•    Chemical filters absorb UV rays and convert them to heat. They typically feel lighter and invisible on the skin, making them easier to apply evenly.

For children, mineral-based formulas are generally the first recommendation — though the most important factor is always that sun cream gets applied and reapplied consistently, regardless of filter type.

Quick label check — what to look for at a glance:
SPF 30 or higher  — SPF 50+ for children and fair skin
UVA circle logo  — confirms UVA as well as UVB protection
Broad-spectrum  — covers both UV types, the key phrase to find
Expiry date (PAO symbol)  — the open jar icon tells you how long after opening it's effective
Water resistant  — essential for swimming or active kids, but still reapply after towel drying

Making Sun Safety a Family Habit

The families who tend to be most consistent with SPF are the ones who've made it as routine as brushing teeth. Keep your sunscreen somewhere visible — next to the front door, in the bathroom cabinet alongside the toothpaste, or in your bag so it's always to hand. Normalising it for children from a young age means they'll grow up reaching for it without being asked.

Sun Safety Week is a brilliant annual nudge to audit your family's habits, restock your SPF, and head into the summer months feeling prepared. And with Nivea's trusted suncare range available at Boots right now - plus the free Solar Buddie offer running from 7th May to 1st July - there's never been a better moment to get sorted for the whole season.
